Basalt fiber is an innovative material extracted from natural volcanic stone, made by high temperature melting at 1450℃ to 1500℃ and platinum rhodium alloy wire drawing technology. Its strength is comparable to high-strength S-type glass fiber, and the cost is lower. This fiber fills the gap between carbon fiber and glass fiber in terms of performance, with comparable tensile strength to the T300 carbon fiber, while having excellent fire resistance and adaptability to extreme temperatures, and can work continuously in the temperature range of -269 ° C to 700 ° C.

In terms of environmental protection, basalt fiber also performs well. Its production process produces less waste, less pollution to the environment, and the product can be naturally degraded after waste, fully reflecting the concept of sustainable development.

Texas basalt continuous fiber industry alliance pointed out: "Basalt continuous fiber is a low-cost alternative to carbon fiber, with a series of excellent properties, especially important, because it is derived from natural ore without any additives, is so far the only non-environmental pollution, non-carcinogenic green healthy glass fiber products, with broad market demand and application prospects."

Historically, the British Wells in 1840 has tried to develop basalt fiber. After that, Paul Dhe, a Frenchman, patented the extraction of fibers from basalt ore in 1923. The real breakthrough came in 1954, when Soviet scientists succeeded in extracting basalt fibers from basalt ore. Before the 1960s, the United States and the Soviet Union had begun to explore its characteristics and uses in the military field. Although China started late in scientific research, since the 1970s, institutions such as the National Academy of Building Materials and the Nanjing Glass Fiber Research Institute have carried out research in the military field. In 2001, China and Russia jointly launched the basalt fiber project.

China started late in basalt fiber production, but the development is fast. At present, it has reached the international leading level in the process and equipment operation stability, fiber performance, and the development of terminal fiber products. At the same time, China's basalt resources are very rich, Gansu, Heilongjiang, Xinjiang, Shanxi, Sichuan and other places have a large number of basalt mineral resources distribution. China has also listed basalt fiber as one of the four major fibers (carbon fiber, aramid, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, basalt fiber) with a focus on development, and has achieved industrial production.
